These are grid cut jigsaws with ordinary piece shapes.
Jumbo is a very large game and puzzle company that has its base in Holland but with offices in a number of other countries. The company can trace its roots back to 1853 although it was over 100 years after that (in 1958) that it introduced its first puzzles.
Rather unusually for a long-established toy manufacturer, the company never dealt in wooden jigsaw puzzles.
The speciality of Jumbo has always been cardboard games including jigsaw puzzles. In 1976 the company established the “Falcon” brand in the UK and it now sells jigsaws under the names of both Falcon and Jumbo. The “Jumbo” name came from the insistence that their toys were strong enough to stand a wooden elephant on!
Jan van Haasteren began producing his famous range of colorful and humorous images for Jumbo in 1980 and it was this that set the scene for the company to become a major player in the jigsaw puzzle market. Sales of Jan Van Haasteren puzzles have sometimes accounted for 40% of the annual sales of the puzzle division of Jumbo.
Another major coup for the company has been their liaison with Graham Thompson who draws their incredibly successful range of images for the “Wasgij” series (jigsaw spelt backwards!).
Jumbo is one of the brands seen most often in UK toy shops.
